263 arrested in gang sweep makes the streets a bit safer today, as federal agents netted these 263 arrests from gangs, mainly the M-13 gang. The ICE announcement comes today for a secret gang sweep that went off in July and August, according to CNN News on Aug. 16. The total arrested includes criminals from 43 different gangs and they were taken out of 71 cities during the nationwide sweep.
Out of the 263 gang members and affiliates arrested in the sweep, many include suspects wanted on murder, sexual assault, assault, kidnapping and robbery charges. The MS-13 gang is also known by the name Mara Salvatrucha. Agents describe this gang as "one of the most dangerous transnational criminal gangs in the world today."
Federal agents report that they arrested 158 members and associates of MS-13, with 105 others allegedly belonging to other gangs. This sweep also brought in 84 non-gang members wanted on criminal charges, along with 14 other people who are facing immigration violations. All of these people who were on the streets are now behind bars as part of the same sweep.
Along with getting these criminals off the streets, ICE's Homeland Security Investigations unit's special agents also seized 28 firearms, 10 kilograms of marijuana, 123 grams of cocaine, over 770 grams of heroin and about $22,400 in cash. This is also off the streets today.
